Book: When We Were Young

Author: Karen Kingsbury

When we were young- Karen Kingsbury has melted my heart with this one (same thing I say whenever I read her book). I could go on and on about this novel, but put simply, this novel reveals a young couple’s marriage in crisis and how things turned around miraculously for them in 24 hours, unbelievable right? That’s just to show how God can make anything possible, even at the dying moment we think it’s over. The title of the book is a reminder that no matter how far we are in marriage or how occupied we are with things in life, we shouldn’t forget the moments that brought us both together, the way we felt about each other in the early days of marriage and how everything was just about love… about us.

This novel is from the Baxter Family series, but I must say, even though I haven’t read the entire series, this is a captivating standalone. These are a few things I took away from reading this novel.

  • This novel is Christian fiction and it really teaches us that no matter how terrible the situation is, God can turn things around when we least expected it.
  • The novel also pictures how we can be strengthened by God in the storm of life, an example is Emily Carter’s mum, who raised her two girls as a single mother.
  • The novel is written from the view of the main characters- Noah and Emily Carter. Noah, a football star in high school, who became a social media celebrity from his public declaration of love for Emily. You need to get a copy of this to find out how this took place, it’s sensational. Not really a fan of Noah Carter because, like some people, they chose to see things from their own perspective and fail to pay attention to the little details that really matter.
  • The author is using an informal style of communication which really connects the reader to the characters. One can relate to the certain behaviors and responses of the characters. The effects of social media are really convincing as it’s actually the reality of the world we live in today.
  • My favorite character, whose role sets quite an example is Emily’s friend Kari. In the midst of her own issues, she was there physically and prayerfully for Emily and Noah. This is true friendship, seeking the good of a friend. More importantly, the ‘last-minute miracle’ idea started with Kari. She hoped things would turn around for her friend Emily even at the last minute.
  • I didn’t just read this novel, I gained some wisdom from it. I’m referring to Elizabeth Baxter’s 10 secrets to a Happy Marriage. I will list the first five here in their order, you can see the rest as you go through the novel, the last secret is one that needs to be held dearly to heart:
  • Keep God first
  • Divorce is not an option
  • Marriage is not 50/50
  • Know your spouse’s love language
  • Expect the best of each other, be patient, and forgive easily…
