Many people dream and intend on being perfect- have a perfect family, perfect children, perfect spouse and also be perfect individual themselves. Is it wrong to desire all these? Absolutely not. There comes a time when we just have to step out of the dream world and face reality. The reality of what and where we are in this world, our environment and the people around us.

What does it mean to be perfect?

To be perfect is to have no flaws or shortcomings. It also means to be excellent in all your doings. Now, looking at ourselves in the mirror, can we attain these qualities of perfection? The first thought that will come to mind is that we are human beings and it is IMPOSSIBLE for us to be perfect. Human beings were just imperfect, we are told… because we are- HUMANS.

In the creation story in Genesis 1:31, “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.” That means everything God created, including man was good, they were all perfect. So, one can conclude that God made you and I perfect.

Matthew 5:48 also tell us, “Be ye therefore perfect even as your heavenly father is perfect.” So, does this actually mean that we human beings can be perfect? I believe we can, but the important thing here is the standard of perfection we follow.

Who’s standard of perfection are you following?

If God created us perfect and admonishes us to be perfect like Him then we should follow his standard, his commandments, his instructions and live the life He wants us to live. It is also important to know that the world has also created its standard of perfection which is a combination of so many things, some so ridiculous that when we look at it, it seems impossible to be that person.

In the world’s standard, we aim at pleasing people, we walk in pretense, we put up appearances, we lie, our hearts are bitter, we offend others, we devalue ourselves etc. The list goes on and on. This is perfection in the eyes of the world, completely different from the standard of God which is direct and simple. Reference the ten commandments and other instructions in the bible.

The word ‘perfect’ might scare some people, so just aim at being GOOD. God created us and said that we are good, so call yourself ‘good’. Follow the standard of God and it will lead you to the perfect end. Can we be perfect? Only God can judge and call us perfect. We just have to do our part by doing the right thing and walking on the path of righteousness.
