Karen takes us yet into another life-changing moment in this book- Someone like you. A book that tells a story of love, pain, compassion, forgiveness, hope, and new beginnings. Everything a family could go through is passionately worded in this book. The emotions and pain breaks the heart and brings tears to the eyes. So, grab your tissue before you begin reading the book.

Someone like you is a story of a young girl, Maddie, who just graduated from college at Indianapolis and luckily got a job at the zoo on her day of graduation. The love of her life crowned the celebration by asking her to marry him. With an initial flicker of doubt about her engagement, she overlooked the feeling and accepted the proposal. This is what she has been waiting for after all. Everything seemed perfect up until a young man who looked like a stalker at first, visits the zoo to tell her she is adopted and she has a biological family in Portland, Oregon.

Is there a perfect time to tell the truth? that’s a question for Maddie’s adoptive mom, Brooke. Fear of letting out a secret of how she got her precious little girl built up into something more drastic. As any human would feel, Maddie was angry at her adoptive parents for not telling her she was adopted sooner. Her anger was a raging fire. Without a second thought, Maddie leaves her fiancé and adoptive family and goes to Portland to meet her biological family. There, she gets to know more about herself, her parents, sister, and her sister’s best friend- Dawson. This moment actually helps her think and make life-changing decisions.

Though the storyline felt short (we never want a good book to have an end), it stirred up a lot of questions while reading. One of the questions one could ask is, “when things happen in life, especially ones that cause pain, is it the will of God?” This brings us to our favorite quote in the book

God isn’t the reason things go wrong,

he’s the rescue,

the only way home.

Even when we may find ourselves in situations that may be caused by none other than ourselves, God is always there to rescue and make everything align again. It might not be the way we want it, but we have to remember, God’s way is not our way.

Maddie gets comfortable in Portland, but with the help of her newfound love, she finds her way home, she finds a way to forgiveness and new beginnings with all the family she’s been blessed with. Loving them the way God wants her to.
